Don’t Play the Cards, Play the People

After reading our post You’re a Poker Player, Even if You have Never Played a Hand of cards, one of our readers commented:  “I read somewhere the thesis that America won the Cold War because the Soviets were playing chess but we were playing poker. They read the ‘board,’ we read the people.”

The analogy was originally drawn around 1940, by economist Oskar Morgenstern. But even today, almost every Texas hold ’em player would agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment. 

Poker is a game of personalities as is life. 

You play the player more than you play the cards, which means that you’re going to play the same hand differently against different people. If you know someone is afraid to lose, you will try to bluff them and get them to fold. You play to their fear. Alternatively, if you play that same hand against a reckless opponent who is in the game for the thrill of it, you are going to be a lot more cautious.

You see the same phenomenon with parents and children, sisters and brothers, employees and supervisors. Would you respond to a micromanager the same way you do to a delegator? You can’t if you want to be successful. Will your significant other get over an argument quicker if you discuss it to death or ignore it and go on to the next chapter?

Knowing what motivates people is critical. 

Know if your opponent is in the game to win or just to have fun. Know if your employees are looking to climb the corporate ladder or are just happy to be able to fund their lifestyle. Some people want to be stars and others are happy to be back-up singers.

Be wary of stereotyping people as you make your assessment, especially when it comes to gender. Women in business are often perceived as more cautious, and their kindness can be mistaken for weakness. At the poker table, men tend to underestimate their female opponents.  This can be a big advantage to a woman at a poker table who really knows how to play.  However, noone wants to be underestimated by someone who has the ability to influence their career or success.  

3 Things you can do to understand people better

    1. Pay attention to what they say. Being a good listener is rare, and can be a major asset. While everyone else is checking their phones, be the one who catches a detail in conversation that could be useful to you later on.
    2. Look for non-verbal cues.  Poker players look for “tells” or non-verbal cues to discern an opponent’s mental state. You can use the same approach; if someone is fidgeting, checking their watch, or dropping their gaze, that means you may need to change your approach and reengage them . (We’ll cover tells in more detail in a future post).
    3. Evaluate past actions and reactions.  Psychologists have been saying for years that how someone behaved in the past is a strong indication as to how they behave in the future. Use this fact to your advantage.

Winning comes in all forms: harmonious relationships, multiple job promotions, changing careers or taking down a big pot in a tournament. So whether you are at the poker table, kitchen table, or conference table, it’s to your advantage to understand the people. 

As all poker players know, the best way to win any game is to play the player.
